This spill-off valve is part of a carbon dioxide-enhanced oil recovery field that Legado Resources operates near Goldsmith, Texas. Since 2008, Legado has used CO2 to tap both a traditional oilfield and a residual zone beneath it. If enough of CO2 can be found, areas of residual oil could add 33 billion barrels to U.S. reserves, according to Advanced Resources International. The U.S. has 222.6 billion barrels of reserves now, the Energy Information Administration says.
