Whiting Petroleum drills a well for carbon dioxide-enhanced oil recovery in the Permian Basin that underlies parts of west Texas and New Mexico, targeting oil about 5,000 feet down. Improved reservoir mapping and real-time computer monitoring allows Whiting to increase pressure in parts of the field and decrease it in others, thereby steering the CO2 to the most lucrative locations in the reservoir.
